Plot

Act One

Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show has come to Cincinnati (“Colonel Buffalo Bill” - this was replaced by "There's No Business Like Show Business" in the 1999 production)! The show stars Frank Butler, a handsome and charming sharpshooter with a reputation for womanizing (“I’m a Bad, Bad Man” - this is cut from the 1999 production). In each new town, Frank challenges the best local shooter to a match. However, Foster Wilson doesn’t want the Wild West performers taking over the grounds of his hotel and he initially refuses to host the match. In an effort to persuade him to agree, Frank gives him a side bet of one hundred dollars. Annie Oakley enters, along with her younger siblings. She is selling the fowl that she has shot and explains to Wilson (with the help of her siblings) that she lives off the land and knows little of life beyond the woods (“Doin’ What Comes Natur’lly”). Wilson realizes that Annie is a brilliant shooter and he enters her into the match against Frank
