Plot

Act I:

At an inn in France, the noblemen, Monsieur de Brétigny and Guillot de Morfontaine, are enjoying a dinner with three young actresses, Poussette, Javotte, and Rosette. As others are waiting for a coach to Paris, Lescaut, is waiting for his younger cousin, Manon, to arrive. Manon is on her way to him to be escorted to a convent. The coach arrives, and Manon come out, ecstatic that she is on her first trip away from home. Guillot sees her and immediately is attracted, so he offers to take Manon away to Paris. She laughs at him, as do his friends, while Lescaut reprimands her for her over-exuberant behavior, thinking that she will be an embarrassment to their family.

Manon gazes at the girls in the Inn and envies how beautifully they are dressed. As she is enjoying the freedom of being away from home, Chevalier des Grieux arrives to catch the coach to Paris, which has already left. Upon seeing Manon, he immediately falls in love. They strike up a conversation, and she tells him
