Synopsis

The setting is a Spanish state prison, a few miles from Seville, in the late 1700s. The opera tells how Leonore, disguised as a prison guard named "Fidelio" attempts to rescues her husband Florestan from death in a political prison. Florestan has been sent to the prison after a personal conflict with Don Pizzaro, the Governor of the prison fortress. Complications arise when the jailor’s daughter, Marzelline, becomes attracted to “Fidelio”. Further, the Prime Minister is about to visit the jail causing Don Pizzaro to want to eliminate (kill) Florestan. Luckily, in the end, Leonore is able to stop Don Pizzaro and free her husband.
