Plot

Act One

Office Manager John Williamson, and one of his salesman, Shelly Levene, have a meeting at a nearby Chinese food restaurant. Levene is desperately trying to convince his boss to give him some of the good real estate leads (helpful information about potential real estate buyers). Williamson decides he will trade some of the best leads for cash, however Levene doesn’t have enough on hand, and leaves feeling slighted and angry.

At another booth in the restaurant, agents Dave Moss and George Aaronow discuss the unbearable pressure being put on them to sell as much property as fast as they possibly can. In order to get back at the management, Moss suggests stealing the leads, and then selling them to another agency - all the while making it look like a burglary. Aaronow is uncomfortable with the plan, but Moss all but forces him to agree, telling Aaronow that just by listening to Moss’ idea he is already complicit in the guilt. Aaronow does not go through with the theft, however.
