Plot

Six Degrees of Separation opens quickly on the aftermath of what seems to be a home invasion. Ouisa and Flan, husband and wife, residents of a New York City apartment overlooking Central Park, and wealthy art dealers, survey their residence in a panic as they comfort and bicker in the midst of crisis. Once reassured that nothing is lost, Ouisa and Flan invite the audience into their story, breaking the fourth wall as they bring the viewers to the start eventful evening that brought them to this point. We cut back to the living room of Ouisa and Flan’s apartment only a few hours earlier. They welcome an even wealthier friend, Geoffrey, a white South African in the era of apartheid, in town on a visit. Flan and Ouisa are also hoping to convince him to invest in an expensive art purchase without appearing desperate.

Their evening is interrupted by the arrival of the doorman, with a bleeding, scared black man who claims he’s just been mugged, he knows Ouisa and Flan’s children, and badly
