Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a play in two parts, performed separately. Written by Jack Thorne, it is based on an original story by Thorne, J.K. Rowling, and John Tiffany. It was the first return to Harry Potter for nearly a decade by international best-seller, Rowling, and the script was published and bought by thousands of eager fans. The play opened at the Palace Theatre in London on 7 June 2016 and officially premiered 3 weeks later on 30 July 2016. During the preview period, Rowling began a #KeepTheSecrets campaign, to encourage those who had seen the play not to reveal the plot before the official opening night. The show has achieved phenomenal success, selling out months in advance. At the 2017 Olivier Awards, the play broke all records by achieving 11 nominations, and ultimately winning 9 awards. These included Best New Play, Best Actor, Best Actor in a Supporting Role, Best Actress in a Supporting Role, and Best Director. The show features a large cast of 42 actors, often playing several parts throughout the course of both parts. In May 2017, it was reported that the play will open on Broadway in April 2018.
