Billy Elliot is based upon the successful 2000 film of the same name. With music by Elton John, the musical opened at the Victoria Palace Theatre in London in 2005. It ran until April 2016 and was nominated for 9 Olivier Awards, winning the award for Best New Musical. In 2014, a live recording of the musical was released on DVD, with Ruthie Henshall playing Mrs. Wilkinson and featuring a special finale with all the previous Billy's performing an awe-inspiring routine. In 2007, the show opened in Sydney, Australia at the Capitol Theatre, closing in November 2008. It then transferred to Melbourne, where it ran until June 2009.

In October 2008, Billy Elliot opened on Broadway at the Imperial Theatre with several of the original London cast. The show was nominated for 15 Tony Awards, tying with The Producers for most nominations ever received for a show. It won 10 in the end, and the three boys sharing the role of Billy jointly won the award for Best Leading Actor in a Musical. The Broadway production received great reviews and ran until January 2012. The show opened in Chicago in 2010 for an 8-month run, followed by a run at the Canon Theatre in Toronto. The musical also embarked on a national US tour in 2010. Billy Elliot has since gone on to premier across the world in countries such as Seoul, Norway, Israel, and Hungary.
