Context

High School Musical on Stage! evolved out of the Disney Channel’s made-for-cable movie, High School Musical (2006), and was adapted for the stage by the original writers David Simpatico and Bryan Louiselle. The original film was watched by over 7.7 million viewers on the Disney Channel, and it was swiftly followed by High School Musical 2 (2007), and High School Musical 3: Senior Year (2008). The “High School Musical: The Concert” tour also ran from November 2006 - January 2007, touring the US and Canada. The popularity of the High School Musical franchise naturally demanded a stage production and, in 2007, High School Musical on Stage! was performed by North Shore Music Theater in Beverly, Massachusetts. The California premiere took place in the same year at the Pacific Repertory Theatre School of Dramatic Arts. This production was then revived in 2008. In August 2007 Disney Theatrical staged a tour around the US that ran until August 2008. The musical premiered in London at the Eventim Apollo, Hammersmith, in 2008 for a two-month run.
