The Devil’s Disciple takes place during the American Revolution in a New Hampshire village. The story revolves around the rascal, Dick Dudgeon, a young revolutionary raised in a strict puritan home. Dick finds himself in need of true religion and passionately believes in the right of human happiness. This quest leads to potentially life-threatening consequences. Some of Shaw's most entertainingly iconographic characters fill out this story of revolt: of one country against another as well as of the inexhaustible battle of the human spirit -- how we choose to create and define ourselves in the face of societal expectations.
