Iphigenia in Tauris

The young princess Iphigenia is being sacrificed to the gods at the hands of her own father, Agamemnon, but before he is able to consummate the act, the goddess Artemis intervenes and replaces the girl with a deer, spiriting her away to the Temple of Artemis in Tauris, where Iphigenia becomes a high priestess. She is forced to serve the goddess by enacting a vicious kind of protection -- slaughtering any foreigners that arrive on her shores. When two strangers arrive on Tauris, claiming to be Iphigenia’s brother Orestes and his comrade, Pylades, Iphigenia is forced to make an impossible choice.
