Context

The stage musical version of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers is based on the MGM musical film which is, in turn, based on The Sobbin’ Women by Stephen Vincent Benet. The novel is inspired by the ancient Roman legend of the Rape of the Sabine Women.

The film version of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers premiered in 1954 and was directed by Stanley Donen. The film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture and won the Academy Award for Best Scoring of a Musical Picture. In 2006, the American Film Institute listed Seven Brides for Seven Brothers as one of the “best American musical
