Legally Blonde: The Musical is based on the 2001 film of the same name, starring Reese Witherspoon and Luke Wilson, as well as the novel of the same name by Amanda Brown. The musical production began with a workshop production in San Francisco in January 2007. It opened on Broadway at the Palace Theatre in April 2007, starring Laura Bell Bundy and directed and choreographed by Jerry Mitchell.
