Son lo Spirito che nega
Sempre tutto; l’astro il fior.
Il mio ghigno e la mia bega
Turban gli ozi al Creator
Voglio il Nulla e del Creato
La tuina universal.
E atmosfera mia,
E atmosfera mia vital
Ciò che chiamasi peccato,
More e mal!
Rido e avvento questa sillaba: “No!”
Stuggo, tento, ruggo sibilo-”No!”
Mordo, invischio, struggo, tento ruggo, sibilo.
Fischio! Fischio! Fischio! Fischio! Eh!
(Fischia violentemente colle dita fra le labbra.)
Parte son d’una latèbra
De gran Tutto: Oscurità
Son figliuol della Tenèbra
Che Tenèbra tornorerà.
S’ore la luce usurpa e afferra
Il mio scettro a ribellion,
Poco andrà e sua tenzon,
V’è sul Sol, v’è sul Sol,
V’è sul Sole la sulla Terra.
Distruzion!
Rideo e avvento questa sillaba: “No!”
Stuggo, tento, ruggo e sibilo-”No!”
Mordo invischio, fischio! Fischio! Fischio! Eh!
(Fischia violentemente.)
Translation by Theodore T Barker, Boston, O. Ditson, 1908, p.10
I’m the Spirit that denieth
All thing, always - stars of flow’rs;
That by sneers and strife supplieth
Cause to vex the Heavenly powers.
I’m for Nought; and for creation,
Ruin, universal death!
And my life, my breath,
And my very life and breath,
Is what here they call transgression,
Sin and Death!
Shouting and laughing out this word I throw: “No!”
Wasting, roaring, hissing, on I go-”No!”
Sland’ring, soiling, wasting, howling, hissing on I go,
Whist’ling, whist’ling, whist’ling, whist’ling! Eh!
(He whistles loudly, with his fingers between his lips.)
Part am I of that condition,
Of the whole obscurity,
Child of darkness and ambition,
Shadows, hiding, wait for me.
If the light usurps, contending,
On my rebel scepter’s right,
Not prolonged will be the fight;
Over sun, over earth,
Over sun and earth is pending
Endless night!
Southing and laughing out this word I throw: “No!”
Blasting, soiling, roaring, on I go - “No!”
Wasting, spoiling, whist’ling, whist’ling, Eh!
(He whistles violently as before.)
