Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho is the recipient of many awards for her compositions, including a Grammy for Best Opera for L'amour de loin in 2011. She is a proponent of the spectralism movement in composition, and was ranked the greatest living composer in 2019 by a poll in the BBC Music Magazine. Her works for stage so far include L'amour de loin, Adriana Mater, and Emilie. In 2016, she made history as the first female composer to have her work performed at The Metropolitan Opera, New York, for over 100 years, preceded only by Ethel Smyth in 1903.
