Italian scholar, journalist, and poet, Carlo Pepoli was borning in Bologna at the end of the 18th century. During his lifetime he was very active in politics, and this led him to move from Italy to Paris, and even to London for a while, as he was exiled under the Austrian rule. During his time in Paris, he worked with Italian composer Gioachino Rossini, and was commissioned to write several libretti.
His most well-know work is the libretto he wrote for Bellini's opera I puritani, which was first produced in 1835.
He returned to Italy in 1859, and renewed his efforts in the political field, taking the office as Mayor of Bologna, and later as a Senator.
