Giacomo Badoaro was born in Venice in 1602, into a noble family. As well as serving on the Doge's advisory board, and in Venice's Council of Ten, he was a member of the Accademia degli Incogniti.
Where his poetry was only considered amateur, and he pursued it only as a pastime, he did produce several opera librettos. The most famous of these is the libretto for Monteverdi's Il ritono d'Ulisse in Patria
