One of the most widely performed dramatists of Ancient Sanskrit drama, almost nothing is known about King Śūdraka (Shudraka). He likely wrote several poems and plays, but the most famous--and the only one certainly attributed to him--is Little Clay Cart (Mṛcchakatika).
Śūdraka likely lived in the fifth century. The prologue of Little Clay Cart identifies him as a ruler, and part of the Kshatriya social order. Unfortunately, no historical records exist to corroborate this biography, and he remains largely a mystery.
