Italian poet and librettist, Pietro Metastasio, was a prolific writer of verse. His works were greatly in demand during his lifetime, and his opera libretti have been set over 800 times. He began his career as one of the tradition of Roman improvisatory poets, but even as a teenager had begun writing and publishing poetry. Metastasio was one of the foremost writers of Italian opera seria, and his works have been adapted and used by nearly every composer across the baroque and classical era.
