George Farquhar was an Irish dramatist in the late Restoration period. He began his career as an actor but, after accidentally stabbing another cast member on stage, he gave up performing and began writing instead. His first comedy, Love in a Bottle premiered in London in 1698. His play, The Constant Couple, was a huge success and he followed it up with a sequel Sir Harry WIldair. Today, Farquhar is best known for his plays, The Recruiting Officer (1706) and The Beaux' Stratagem (1707). Tragically, Farquhar died not quite 2 months after the opening of The Beaux Stratagem.
