Marc Acito is an American playwright, novelist, and humorist. Born in Bayonne, New Jersey, Acito attended Westfield High School before studying in the BFA musical theatre program at Carnegie Mellon University. Acito left before graduation and graduated from Colorado College with a bachelor’s degree in 1990. Before writing for theatre, Acito worked as a novelist and a journalist. His most notable works are his comic novels How I Paid for College and Attack of the Theatre People. Acito also writes a syndicated humor column, “The Gospel According to Marc”, which ran for four years in various gay publications.
Acito began to gain notoriety in the theatre community in 2012 when he won the Charles MacArthur Award for Outstanding New Play for his play Birds of a Feather. His most notable work is Allegiance, which Acito wrote the libretto for. Allegiance won the 2012 Craig Noel Award for Outstanding New Musical before transferring for a run on Broadway in 2015. Some of Acito’s other works include How I Paid for College (the musical adaptation of his novel), A Room With a View (2014), and Chasing Rainbows (2015). Acito currently lives in New York City with his husband, Floyd Sklaver.
