A contemporary of baroque composers such as Claudio Monteverdi and Jean-Baptiste Lully, Juan Hidalgo de Polanco is perhaps the most enduring Spanish composer of the 17th century. During his time as a court musician and chief composer to King Philip IV of Spain, Hidalgo wrote many works for stage. He is widely believed to be responsible for the development of the Spanish Zarazuela form, and his opera Celos aun del aire matan is the oldest known Spanish-language opera.
