César Cui was a Russian composer, and one of the members of 'The Mighty Handful' or 'The Five', a group of five Russian composers who sought to find a Russian national identity in classical music. Despite his nationalistic endeavours, his compositional style was heavily influenced by the European styles of the Russian operatic stage, which prevailed early in the century. A few of his operas, including Feast in the Time of Plague, were based on the works of Aleksandr Pushkin.
