Known for his love of Parisian luxury and society, Jules Barbier was a 19th century French writer, who wrote librettos for many prominent French composers of the time, such as Offenbach, Masse, Meyerbeer, Saint-Seans, and Gounod. He often collaborated with Michel Carré, including on a French adaptation of Shakespeare's Hamlet, which was set to music by Ambroise Thomas.
