Jean-François Bayard was one of the biggest names in the vaudeville scene of 19th century Paris. Writing in his spare time whilst working as a clerk for a law firm, he managed to write over 200 works for theatre. His work was primarily comedy, although he also wrote some dramas, and collaborated with Georges Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges on La fille du regiment.
Interestingly, Bayard had a close friendship with well-known dramatist and opera librettist Eugene Scribe, and even married Scribe's niece.
