Del Shores is a playwright, screenwriter, director, and actor. His movies and plays often satirically explore the intersection of religion, LGBTQ themes, and life in the southern United States. His first play, Cheatin’, debuted in Los Angeles in 1984. He followed this with his play, Daddy’s Dyin’, Who’s Got the WIll? in 1987. His best-known play is Sordid Lives, which premiered in 1996 and was turned into a 1999 movie starring Beau Bridges, Delta Burke, and Olivia Newton John. In 2001, he received a GLAAD Media Award for his play Southern Baptist Sissies.
In addition to his plays, Shores has also written for film and television. He wrote and directed film adaptations of his plays Sordid Lives and Southern Baptist Sissies. A movie adaptation of Daddy’s Dyin’, Who’s Got the Will? was directed by Jack Fisk with a screenplay by Shores. He has also acted in a number of independent films. Shores currently resides in Los Angeles and continues to write, direct, and produce.
