Caryl Phillips was born in St. Kitts but moved to the UK when he was a baby. He grew up in Leeds and studied English Literature at Oxford University. His first plays for the theatre include Strange Fruit (1980), Where There is Darkness (1982), and The Shelter (1983). He then moved on to writing for radio and television, alongside many novels, including A State of Independence (1986), Crossing the River (1993), A Distant Shore (2003), and _Dancing in the Dark (2005). In 2007, he adapted Simon Schama’s Rough Crossings for the stage. Phillips is currently Professor English at Yale University.
