Timothy Mason was an American playwright and author. Born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, he grew up in Minneapolis and graduated from St. Olaf College. He began writing plays for the Children's Theatre Company of Minneapolis in college and later became a resident playwright there. His plays include Levitation, Babylon Gardens, and Only You, all of which have been produced at Circle Repertory Company in New York. He also wrote the book and lyrics for the musical Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas!.
Mason was also a published author. He wrote a fantasy-action novel for children, The Last Synapsid, and an adult historical thriller, The Darwin Affair. He received the Kennedy Center Fund for New American Plays Award, a National Society of Arts and Letters Award, the Berilla Kerr Playwrights Award, and a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. Timothy Mason died in 2023 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
