Jennifer Haley is an American playwright and screenwriter. She was born in San Antonio, Texas, and double-majored in liberal studies and theatre at the University of Texas, Austin. Encouraged by her playwriting professor, Haley shifted her focus from acting to writing and attended the graduate playwriting program at Brown University, where she was mentored by playwright Paula Vogel. In the late 1990s, she worked as a web designer, which would influence her play’s technology themes.
Haley’s best-known play, The Nether, opened at London’s Royal Court Theatre in 2014 and the Off-Broadway MCC Theater in 2015. The play won the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize and was nominated for Best New Play at the 2015 Olivier Awards. She is a member of New Dramatists and founded The Playwrights Union, a community of playwrights in Los Angeles.
