One of the most well-known French composers from the baroque era, Jean-Baptiste Lully embraced the French culture so much that he abandoned any of his original connections to Italy, officially becoming a French citizen in 1661.
His operas have been proclaimed as some of the best examples of the French baroque style. Many of them are collaborations with librettist Philippe Quinault, and set the style of the French tragedies-lyriques the counterpart to the Italian opera seria.
Lully is also know for his court ballets, and his sacred music.
