Stephen Massicotte
Stephen Massicotte (born April 18, 1969 in Trenton, Ontario) is an award‑winning Canadian playwright, screenwriter, and actor, renowned for his evocative and imaginative theatrical works.
Growing up in Thunder Bay and later studying graphic design at Cambrian College and drama at the University of Calgary, Massicotte began his career immersed in Calgary’s theatre scene. He co‑founded Ground Zero Theatre and performed on stage before shifting his focus toward writing plays that blend wit, romance, and philosophical edge.
Massicotte gained international acclaim with Mary’s Wedding (2002), which premiered at Alberta Theatre Projects and won multiple awards: the Alberta Playwrighting Competition Prize (2000), a Betty Mitchell Award (2002), and the Alberta Book Award for Drama (2003). The play has been produced in over a hundred venues worldwide and later adapted into an opera by Pacific Opera Victoria.
Other notable works include The Oxford Roof Climber’s Rebellion, winner of the 2007 Canadian Authors Association Award and Alberta Book Award, among others
