Jerry Ross or Jerold Rosenberg (1923-1955) was an American lyricist and composer. After attending New York University, Ross came into contact with Richard Adler who would become his frequent collaborator. Together, they were mentored by Frank Loesser (How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying) and had their first number 1 hit, “Rags to Riches” sung by Tony Bennett in 1953. In that same year, Ross and Adler had their first broadway success with songs in Almanac. The following year however, they would have a smash-hit on their hands titled The Pajama Game (1954). It had 1,063 performances and won the Tony awards for Best Musical and Best Choreography. The next year, Ross and Adler would mount yet another smash-hit, Damn Yankees (1955), which would also go on to win many Tony awards including Best Musical.
