Edmond Rostand was a French dramatist best known for his romance Cyrano de Bergerac. While many of his contemporaries were writing in the new naturalistic style, Rostand wrote in the romantic style, privileging poetic sensibilities over the realism that was popular at the time. Many of his plays were based on or inspired by actual historical events or people. Tragically, Rostand died at only 50 years, a victim of the flu pandemic of 1918.
