Woody Allen began his career as a comedy writer in the 1950s, writing jokes and scripts for television and publishing several books of short humor pieces. In the early 1960s, Allen began performing as a stand-up comedian, focusing on monologues, rather than traditional stand up jokes. By the mid sixties, he began writing and starring in films, and has since made over 50 films, including Annie Hall (1970), _Manhattan _(1979), and Match Point (2005). He has won four Academy Awards and nine British Academy Film Awards.
