Alice Dunbar-Nelson was a poet, journalist, activist and teacher. She was born in the South among the first generation of African-Americans to be free after the Civil War. She married another poet, Paul Laurence Dunbar, and became a prominent figure in the Harlem Renaissance. Her first husband died and she married Robert J. Nelson, a poet and activist, and she got more involved in politics. She and Paul lived in Wilmington, Delaware where she became a high school teacher and wrote her first and only play, Mine Eyes Have Seen.
