Tim Minchin is an Australian comedian, composer, actor, and writer. He was born in October 1975 and grew up in Perth, Western Australia. He attended Christ Church Grammar School, The University of Western Australia (Bachelor of Arts) and The WA Academy of Performing Arts (Advanced Diploma of Contemporary Music). He began his career playing keyboards for other musicians then, in 2003, he debuted his first solo comic cabaret show, Navel – Cerebral Melodies With Umbilical Chords, for the Melbourne Fringe Festival. Minchin has since regularly toured the UK and Australia as a solo performer, drawing huge audiences.
In 2009, Minchin was commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) to write the music and lyrics for a stage adaptation of Roald Dahl’s Matilda. The musical was a huge success across the world and won the Olivier Award for Best New Musical. In 2016, he wrote the music and lyrics for the musical adaptation of Groundhog Day and the show ran on the West End, before moving to Broadway.
Minchin was awarded the Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for significant service to the performing arts and to the community in 2020.
