Along with Giuseppe Giacosa, Luigi Illica is responsible for creating the librettos to some of the world's most well-loved operas. His most famous works include La Boheme, Tosca and Madama Butterfly for Giacomo Puccini, and Andrea Chenier for Umberto Giordano, and he also collaborated with Alfredo Catalani, and Pietro Mascagni. His stories were so popular that in the era of the silent film, many of his librettos were reproduced in film format, of course without the music. Still today, Illica's success is well remembered through the Luigi Illica International Prize, which is awarded to opera singers, conductors, directors, or authors every two years.
