About
Marist College offers a Bachelor of Arts in English with a concentration in Theatre, as well as a Theatre minor. The Theatre concentration allows students to take focused coursework in acting, directing, stagecraft, and dramatic literature within the broader context of an English degree. The Theatre minor provides additional flexibility for students in other majors who wish to pursue theatre training. Both tracks are designed to foster creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration through a combination of academic study and practical performance experience.
The curriculum emphasizes a well-rounded theatrical education. Acting courses help students develop performance techniques and character analysis skills, while stagecraft classes introduce the fundamentals of technical theatre, including set design, lighting, and costuming. Students also study theatre history, playwriting, and directing, gaining a broad understanding of the theatrical arts. This foundation prepares graduates for a variety of career paths in and beyond the arts, including education, communication, media, and public service.
Marist students have access to several on-campus performance venues and rehearsal spaces, including the Nelly Goletti Theatre and facilities in the Fusco Music Center and Steel Plant. These modern spaces provide students with the opportunity to work in professional-style environments and gain hands-on experience with every aspect of theatrical production. Productions range from small student showcases to full-scale musicals and plays, giving students a range of opportunities to perform, design, and direct.
A key component of the Marist theatre experience is the Marist College Club of Theatre Arts (MCCTA), a student-run organization that produces multiple shows each year. These include musicals, plays, original works, and children’s theatre, all created and managed by students. Through MCCTA, students take on leadership roles and collaborate across disciplines to bring their artistic visions to life. Additional opportunities include participation in a playwriting contest, membership in a national theatre honor society, and a pre-college summer theatre program for high school students.
Theatre students at Marist benefit from the college’s close proximity to New York City and its vibrant theatre scene. Many students pursue internships with professional theatres, production companies, and arts organizations, gaining valuable industry experience before graduation. Incoming students with a strong interest in theatre may also apply for renewable scholarships that support their artistic and academic growth. With its balance of theory, practice, and real-world connections, the Marist theatre program offers a dynamic and comprehensive education for aspiring theatre artists.
