Marshall University

About
Marshall University’s School of Theatre & Dance, located within the College of Arts & Media, delivers a professionally oriented theatre education grounded in liberal arts values. Accredited and mission‑driven, the program blends rigorous academic coursework with immersive studio practice. Freshmen begin with core classes in acting, voice, movement, technical theatre, and costuming, creating a shared foundation that builds community and collaborative spirit.
Each season, Marshall mounts a diverse lineup including four mainstage productions in venues like the Francis‑Booth Experimental Theatre at the Joan C. Edwards Performing Arts Center. The department’s 2024–25 season featured titles such as A Doll’s House, Sylvia, The SpongeBob Musical, and Every Christmas Story Ever Told (And Then Some!). Productions include dance concerts and opportunities for post-show discussions with directors, casts, and guest artists.
After foundational coursework in their first year, students pursue an emphasis in either Performance or Production. Sophomores undergo juried “Sophomore Review” to assess progress, and juniors in performance study advanced acting—including Meisner technique—and movement in period styles, while production students begin training in drafting, scenic and costume design, and stage technologies. These upper-division offerings also include audition technique and portfolio preparation.
Marshall’s Musical Theatre B.F.A. stands out for its conservatory-style rigor. Offered jointly by the School of Theatre & Dance and the School of Music, it encompasses intensive training in acting, singing, dance, and professional wellness—with students culminating their studies in a capstone performance and industry showcase. The program is supported through the Center for Wellness in the Arts, offering performance-specific health, vocal, and injury-prevention services.
Faculty include working artists and scholars, offering mentorship, real-world production opportunities, and connections to regional arts organizations. Graduates leave with strong portfolios, performance credits, and professional readiness—some launching into careers in theatre, film, education, or continuing on to graduate study in competitive B.F.A. or M.F.A. programs across the country.
