Amarillo College

About
Amarillo College offers a comprehensive Theatre Arts program, blending core academic coursework with conservatory-style training through its Conservatory Theatre (ACCT) at historic Ordway Hall. The curriculum features foundational courses such as Acting I & II, Voice for the Actor, Script Analysis, Stage Movement, Stagecraft I & II, Stage Makeup, Costume Technology, and Theatre Practicums I–IV—designed to develop both performance and technical proficiency. Each practical course builds progressively, enabling students to deepen skills in acting, voice, movement, and stagecraft while fulfilling transfer pathways or broad personal enrichment goals.
Students receive immersive training through Amarillo College Conservatory Theatre (ACCT) using the Theatre Steps method, which supports structured progression in characterization, scene work, ensemble collaboration, and musical theatre foundations. Actively taught by faculty with strong ties to the local arts community, the program encourages early performance participation even for non-majors, while maintaining high standards for all participants.
Public productions are produced under the banner of TheatreAC, presenting a robust lineup including classics like Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead and contemporary pieces such as The Siegel (summer 2025 season). Productions take place in professional-grade performance spaces, with regular ticket prices ranging from $6 to $10—supporting student involvement both onstage and backstage while drawing diverse community audiences.
The program is affiliated with the Texas Educational Theatre Association and regularly participates in the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF) regional circuit. These affiliations provide students with networking, workshop, and educational research opportunities, crucial for transfer to universities or careers both within and beyond theatre.
Overall, Amarillo College’s Theatre Arts program delivers an inclusive, hands-on theatre education. Through structured coursework, community-driven productions, and professional affiliations, the curriculum ensures that all students build practical experience, critical thinking, performance versatility, and readiness for next-step academic or creative pursuits—all within a supportive and affordable community college setting.
