Catawba College

About
Catawba College’s Theatre Arts program is dedicated to nurturing well-rounded artists, scholars, and leaders who are prepared to make a meaningful impact on the world of theatre. The program emphasizes creative collaboration, ethical engagement, and interdisciplinary awareness, encouraging students to connect their craft to broader societal and global conversations. With a mission to “change the face of American theatre,” Catawba fosters an inclusive and forward-thinking environment that challenges students to grow both artistically and personally.
Students can pursue a variety of degree options, including a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Arts, a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Performance, Design & Production, or Musical Theatre, and a Bachelor of Science in Theatre Arts Administration. The curriculum is flexible and allows students to explore a range of interests while also developing specialized skills in their chosen concentration. Additionally, students may pursue minors or participate in interdisciplinary programs, including an emerging Bachelor of Science that integrates Communications, Music, and Theatre.
The curriculum begins with foundational courses in acting, movement, voice, dramatic literature, design, and stagecraft. As students progress, they dive deeper into their focus areas through studio courses, workshops, and hands-on production work. BFA students receive advanced training, including directing and technical courses, while all students participate in a robust season of theatre productions. Opportunities for involvement extend beyond the classroom through student-led organizations like the Blue Masque, professional internships, and study abroad programs that provide global artistic exposure.
Catawba offers a range of scholarships to support students financially, including merit-based awards for performers, designers, and technicians, as well as the competitive Hobgood full-tuition scholarship. Students gain real-world experience through internships with respected institutions such as the Williamstown Theatre Festival, American Shakespeare Center, and local partners like Lee Street Theatre. The college’s specialized facilities—such as scene, costume, and lighting studios—equip students with the tools to bring their creative visions to life in a professional setting.
The faculty at Catawba College includes experienced professionals across multiple disciplines, providing students with mentorship rooted in industry expertise. Graduates of the program go on to pursue successful careers as actors, directors, designers, educators, and arts administrators, with many continuing their studies at top graduate programs including NYU Tisch, UT Austin, and the University of Oregon. With its blend of rigorous training, performance opportunities, and strong professional preparation, Catawba’s Theatre Arts program offers a dynamic and empowering foundation for aspiring theatre artists.
