Montgomery County Community College

About

Montgomery County Community College offers an Associate of Arts degree in Theatre Arts, tailored for students interested in acting, directing, stagecraft, and design. The 60–61 credit program blends general education with specialized theatre coursework, providing a foundation in both academic and practical skills. Students take classes in areas such as acting, theatre appreciation, stagecraft, and design, preparing them either to transfer to a four-year program or enter the workforce in a theatrical setting.

The curriculum is designed to develop a wide range of skills. Acting courses focus on collaboration, character development, and performance, while theatre appreciation introduces students to theatre history and literature. Technical training is emphasized through production workshops, which offer hands-on experience in set building, lighting, and backstage work. Students graduate with a comprehensive understanding of how productions come together and the responsibilities of various theatre professionals.

Montco students have access to top-tier performance spaces on both campuses. The Blue Bell campus features a 563-seat mainstage theater and a Black Box space, while the Pottstown campus hosts the West End Theater. These venues are used for a full season of student and community performances, offering opportunities for students to practice their craft in real-world environments equipped with professional lighting and sound systems.

Outside the classroom, students can get involved in theatre-focused extracurriculars. Drama clubs at both campuses produce plays each semester and host workshops, improv nights, and open mics. These clubs foster a sense of community and provide additional performance opportunities. Scholarships are available for student participants, and internship opportunities with regional theatre companies allow students to gain experience beyond the college setting.

Montco’s Theatre Arts program is closely connected with the local cultural scene. The college’s Cultural Center hosts a wide variety of performances and events, often showcasing student work. The long-running Summer Dinner Theatre series allows students to perform in full-scale productions that combine theatre with hospitality, providing a unique professional experience. Overall, the program offers a dynamic, hands-on education that supports both creative growth and career preparation.
