About

Curtin University offers one of the oldest and most established tertiary Theatre Arts majors in Western Australia, housed within its Bachelor of Creative Arts, Bachelor of Arts, or combined degrees (e.g. BA/BCom). The program blends performance practice and rigorous theoretical inquiry, cultivating skills in acting, directing, devising, dramaturgy, critical analysis, and stage management within a liberal arts context.

Students engage in an extensive production schedule through the on-campus Hayman Theatre Company, participating in five major productions and up to 25 student‑directed shows each year. These performances take place across a range of spaces—from the university’s on‑campus theatres to off‑campus venues in Perth—covering classical drama, contemporary works, devised projects, and international plays.

Curriculum combines studio-based training with academic units that support performance-making and analysis. First-year students explore acting fundamentals and devising, while second- and third-year courses extend into voice, movement, technical theatre, collaborative practice, directing, dramaturgy, Australian and international theatre traditions, and professional theatre practice.

Learning is guided by experienced faculty and artists-in-residence, many of whom have active roles in Australia’s performing arts sector. The program emphasizes professional standards and reflective practice. Students develop portfolios through production, gain experience across creative roles, and are encouraged to consider global and Indigenous cultural perspectives in their work.

Graduates move into diverse theatre-related careers including acting, directing, technical and production design, playwriting, production/backstage management, and arts administration. Many have gone on to work in theatre, film, television, and creative industries, supported by Curtin’s reputation and the portfolio experience accrued through its extensive program.
