About
MacEwan University’s Department of Theatre, part of its Faculty of Fine Arts and Communications, delivers hands‑on professional training through two Bachelor of Fine Arts programs. The department emphasizes experiential learning: students actively engage in MacEwan’s annual theatre season starting from their first year, working in areas such as performance, technical production, and musical theatre .
One major focus is the B.F.A. in Theatre Production, designed to prepare students for careers as technicians, artisans, and production managers. From day one through the final year, students participate in every stage of live theatre—from carpentry and scenic painting to lighting, sound, props, and stage management—by working as members of creative teams producing the university’s mainstage and workshop shows .
The second major is B.F.A. in Music Theatre Performance, a conservatory-style program targeting performers with training in acting, voice, movement, music theory, and audition technique. Students progress through intensive studio and performance courses, culminating in public productions that span musicals and contemporary plays .
MacEwan students benefit from world-class facilities located in Allard Hall on the downtown Edmonton campus. These include the 415-seat Triffo Theatre, the 120-seat Theatre Lab, and performance, rehearsal, and teaching studios—all supporting a dynamic city arts environment and numerous performance opportunities .
The curriculum is integrated into a broader Bachelor of Fine Arts degree encompassing four majors—Music Theatre Performance, Theatre Production, Arts & Cultural Management, and Studio Arts. The B.F.A. ensures both depth in a chosen discipline and interdisciplinary breadth through elective courses in arts, culture, and management.
