Middle Tennessee State University offers a Bachelor of Science in Theatre through its Department of Theatre and Dance. The program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in theatre, preparing them for a wide range of careers in the performing arts, education, and entertainment industries. With multiple areas of emphasis—including performance, directing, design and technical theatre, and teacher licensure—the program allows students to tailor their studies to align with their interests and career goals.
Students in the theatre program receive both academic and practical training in key areas such as acting, directing, stage management, design, theatre history, and script analysis. The curriculum is carefully structured to provide a balance of classroom learning and hands-on experience. Whether students are interested in performance or technical theatre, they develop critical skills through lab work, workshops, and collaborative productions.
MTSU’s facilities include the 1,000-seat Tucker Theatre and the Anderson Studio Theatre, which serve as primary venues for departmental productions. These state-of-the-art spaces allow students to engage in every aspect of live theatre, from acting and directing to set construction, lighting, and sound design. The performance season features a variety of productions, ranging from contemporary plays and musicals to classical theatre, giving students the opportunity to work in diverse styles and genres.
The program also emphasizes professional development and industry exposure. Guest artists and industry professionals regularly visit campus to offer workshops and masterclasses. Students are encouraged to participate in internships, theatre festivals, and conferences, expanding their networks and gaining valuable real-world experience. Faculty mentors work closely with students to guide them in artistic growth and career planning.
Graduates of MTSU’s theatre program go on to successful careers in a range of fields, including regional and national theatre, theme park entertainment, education, and technical production. Some pursue graduate studies, while others enter the workforce immediately with skills in performance, design, and stage management. With its strong liberal arts foundation and practical training, the theatre program at MTSU equips students to thrive in the dynamic and competitive world of theatre.
