About

At the undergraduate level, University of Guelph’s Theatre Studies interweaves academic rigour with hands-on theatre practice. Students explore dramatic literature, theatre history, criticism, theory, and design, while also engaging in practical disciplines like acting, directing, technical theatre, playwriting, dramaturgy, and media studies. The program encourages participation in both scripted and devised productions, providing a well-rounded foundation for future creators. One standout feature is the capstone project, where students collaboratively launch a student-led theatre company, culminating in a fully produced show that draws on all aspects of their training—from acting and staging to marketing and stage management.

University of Guelph deeply values an immersive learning atmosphere. Theatre students analyze plays, attend professional productions, and contribute directly behind the scenes or on stage, without needing to audition for entry. A current student described the program as uniquely collaborative: “The staff aren’t just your teachers, they’re your artistic collaborators and colleagues in many different projects, and it’s a very close-knit community.” This close-knit, collaborative environment sets the stage for meaningful mentorship and peer support throughout the program.

Theatre Studies at Guelph extends beyond undergraduate studies into graduate-level opportunities. The MA in Theatre Studies is a research-based degree that blends theory and practice, preparing students for doctoral-level study or varied careers in academia and the arts. Students can complete the MA in one year across three semesters via either coursework plus a major research paper or a traditional thesis track. The PhD in Literary Studies/Theatre Studies is designed for students with a strong scholarly background and encourages interdisciplinary exploration at the intersection of theatre and literary studies. Typically completed in four years, it offers opportunities for deeper theoretical and inter-discursive work.

Graduates of Theatre Studies emerge with versatile skill sets applicable beyond the stage. Career paths include acting, directing, drama teaching, stage and lighting design, arts administration, digital marketing, game design, narration, and film/TV production. The integration of theory and practice, combined with direct participation in productions and collaborative projects, equips students with adaptable, creative competencies valued across both arts and communications industries.

University of Guelph’s Theatre Studies program is part of the broader School of Theatre, English, and Creative Writing, which fosters exploration across literature, creative writing, acting, directing, and design. The program also connects to a wider cultural ecosystem, with notable alumni such as Sue LePage, a celebrated set and costume designer, and Kelly Thornton, an acclaimed theatre director. The university supports student engagement in local artistic events and productions, such as staging musicals and hosting film festivals, enriching the cultural network and real-world exposure of its theatre students.
