Introduction
In this module, we’ll talk about the basics of choosing smart repertoire for college musical theatre auditions.
Terminology
- Art Song: A song written to be sung in recital, typically with piano accompaniment and often set to a poem.
- Character Type: A stock character that has particular attributes and plays a specific role in the narrative of a show (e.g., funny best friend, romantic lead, etc).
- Commedia dell’arte: An improvised kind of popular comedy in Italian theaters in the 16th–18th centuries, based on stock characters.
- Essence: The rich qualities and singular experiences a person possesses that make them unique.
- Golden Age: References an era of book musicals written roughly between the 1940s and the 1960s.
- Prescreen: A video audition submitted in consideration for a live audition for a musical theatre program.
