Katie Mitchell is an innovative British theatre director whose unique style has divided both critics and audiences.

Introduction

Katie Mitchell was born in Reading, England. Her mother worked as a cook and her father was a dentist. She was educated at Oakham School in Rutland and began directing school productions as a student. Mitchell then gained a place at Magdalen College, Oxford to study English. She has one daughter, born in 2005.

Key Dates & Events

  • 1989 - Mitchell receives the Winston Churchill Travel Fellowship to study directing in Russia, Poland, Georgia, and Lithuania.
  • 1996 - Mitchell becomes an associate director of the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC).
  • 2000 - Mitchell becomes associate director at the Royal Court Theatre.
  • 2003 - Mitchell is invited to become associate director at the National Theatre.
  • 2008 - Mitchell publishes two books detailing her innovative live cinema process …some trace of her and Waves.
