Introduction
Katie Mitchell was born in Reading, England. Her mother worked as a cook and her father was a dentist. She was educated at Oakham School in Rutland and began directing school productions as a student. Mitchell then gained a place at Magdalen College, Oxford to study English. She has one daughter, born in 2005.

- 1989 - Mitchell receives the Winston Churchill Travel Fellowship to study directing in Russia, Poland, Georgia, and Lithuania.
- 1996 - Mitchell becomes an associate director of the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC).
