Introduction
Jamie Lloyd was born in Poole, Dorset in 1980. His father was a truck driver, who played drums in a tribute band to Cliff Richard and the Shadows and his mother ran a fancy-dress business. He has two half-brothers and two half-sisters. When he was five, his parents split up and his mother remarried. When Lloyd was 11, his mother met her third husband and moved the family to Hastings. While directing the Donmar Warehouse’s West End staging of Guys and Dolls, he met his wife, actress Suzie Toase. They have two sons, Lewen and George.

- 2006 - Lloyd directed The Caretaker at Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre.
- 2008 - 2011 - Lloyd takes the position of associate director at the Donmar Warehouse.
- 2008 - Lloyd wins the Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in an Affiliate Theatre for The Pride at the Royal Court.
- 2013 - Lloyd founds The Jamie Lloyd Company.
- 2024 - Lloyd’s reimagined 2023 revival of Sunset Boulevard wins 7 Olivier Awards, including Best Director of a Musical.
- 2025 - The Broadway transfer of Sunset Boulevard is nominated for 7 Tony Awards and wins 3, including Best Revival of a Musical.
Context & Analysis
Education and Influences
After school, Lloyd gained a place at The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, studying performance and then direction. A production he staged there won an award at the National Student Drama Festival, and the prize was an assistant director’s job on a Richard Cameron play at the Bush Theatre.
