My folks don’t even match up with other parents, let alone me. I mean, they’re both extremely tall. My mother’s 6 foot 4. And she looks up—way up—to my father. Still, so what if they’re tall. They also have hearts as big as they come. Which comes in handy—‘cause I often have nightmares and wake them at night. No, the nightmares aren’t about giants. Nothing like that. I dream about being left alone in the dark—with horrific sounds creeping up all around me. I think it’s because—oh there’s no other way to say it—I was abandoned by my birth parents when I was less than a year-old. But these parents —tall as they may be—they reach down to hug me and let me know everything will be okay. No matter what, they’re around to comfort me—about anything.
