Text

Never said? You never said? You don’t need to say a damn thing, it’s in your eyes, it’s in the way you walk into the room. The way that you look at me every goddamn day - like if I had been doing my job, if I’d been a better Momma, she would still be here. It was two minutes! It was two minutes, I went to answer the door, talk to that bitch lady next door ‘bout her dog and all - it was two minutes, Raoul. I went right back there, and she was still in the pool, but she wasn’t moving, and her face... and the water was still, it was so still. I pulled her out, and I’m squeezing her and I’m shaking her trying to shake the water out of her. It was two minutes, Raoul, two minutes and my girl was gone.

(beat)

I dream of her every night. I can’t stop. I don’t want to stop.

(beat)

How can you - how can you lie there, sleeping every night like nothing’s changed?! She used to come into that bed with us, she used to crawl into that bed right between us every time that she had bad dreams, and you lie there like that - that space between us ain’t empty.

(beat)

Her face, in the water. She looks at me, she crawls out that swimming pool, and I can’t... I can’t move. She crawls out, and she walks at me, I know she’s coming for me. She gets closer, and closer - she never gets to me. I wake up.

(beat)

I don’t know what she’s gonna do, but I know somehow, she gonna take me back in the pool with her, her hands are gonna be cold, so cold, and she’s gonna take me back into the water with her, and it will be all so still. She comes out, and there’s no ripples, and I know it’s going to be just as still for me. And I’m okay with it, Raoul. I don’t mind. I want her to do it.
